Purple Run Half Marathon 2021

Friday 4/9
Per the usual, I left the house for my drive up to Vegas shortly after eating lunch. However this time, I didn't need to get fuel at the gas station since I did that last weekend. Lately, this drive is getting longer and longer. It took nearly 5 hrs to arrive at the WorldMark Las Vegas - Spencer Street property. I checked-in and was assigned unit 217. I've never been in this building before. It was right next to the pool. Hopefully it doesn't get too noisy.

After getting settled in and watching a little of the Masters tournament, I hopped back in the car to pick up dinner at Chick-fil-A. Sorry McDonald's, but I finally committed to working my way up to Signature status. I ordered a Spicy Southwest salad with grilled nuggets and a Chick-fil-A sandwich. Traffic was a bitch having to cross The Strip.

Trying to reach Signature status!

After finishing my dinner, I laid out my flat runner for tomorrow's race. It was going to be a warm day, but I thought that I would get some heat training in by wearing a black colored long-sleeved shirt. I chose this shirt because it had some purple on it. That should make it appropriate for tomorrow's Purple Run. I then took a shower and watched some WWE Friday Night SmackDown before calling it a night.

Saturday 4/10
I woke up early to watch the Man City v. Leeds match that started at 4:30 am. Leeds managed to win 2-1 with both goals coming from Dallas, the second one coming in stoppage time. At about a quarter after 6, I started heading over to Sunset Park for the race.

After picking up my race packet, I still had some time before the start of the race at 7:30 am. I decided that this was as good a time as any to finally check out all of the informational plaques that were located around the start of the race.

After I was done checking things out, I went back to my car to get ready for the race and then meet up with the usual gang for the pre-race photo. It was a little weird not seeing Robert at the race!

Start line

Per the usual, I took off running at a decent pace. However as I was taking my mask off, I ended up dropping it. I had to stop to pick it up and not be trampled by those running behind me. The first 3 miles went okay, but by mile 4, I was already feeling gassed. Normally that "out-of-gas" feeling comes around mile 8 for this particular course. The warmer weather and my clothing choice made the rest of the race a real grind. I finally settled into a jog/walk pattern where my miles were around 11:30 minutes per mile.

And we're off!

Finish: 2:12:44

Ugh! That was quite the struggle for "just" a half marathon! I definitely need more heat training if I am to be ready for the Running with the Devil race in June!

Finish

After getting my finisher medal and some post race snacks, I found a chair and sat down. I chatted with the EMS lady about the warmer weather and COVID. I waited for a couple of my friends to finish, but mostly it was for me to recover enough so that I could safely drive again as I was feeling a little dizzy!

Back at my unit, I caught the remainder of the Palace v. Chelsea match. I was hoping for an upset by Palace, but they lost 1-4. Even though I dislike Chelsea, I do like seeing Christian Pulisic doing better. I then followed that up with watching round 3 of the Masters.

I drove over to Chick-fil-A to pick up a late lunch. For this visit, I ordered a deluxe Chick-fil-A sandwich meal with pepper Jack cheese, fruit cup, and frosted lemonade. That frosted lemonade really hit the spot after running a warm weather race!

For dinner, as much as I love Chick-fil-A, I didn't feel like eating there again. Also I didn't feel like eating at McDonald's. Lately, I've been seeing Red Lobster ads on Facebook. The ads were for their new wagyu bacon cheeseburger. Normally, I would only eat seafood at a seafood restaurant just as I would only eat steaks at a steakhouse, but I just had to give this one a try. I placed my order on their mobile app. For my side, I got the creamy langostino and lobster mashed potatoes for a $3.99 upcharge. When it was time, I drove over to the restaurant to pick it up. I went to the bar area to check-in and pay for my food. They were already allowed to have indoor dining, so I thought I could wait inside. However, the guy handling the to-go orders informed me that I had to wait outside. Cool, no problem. He was very nice and brought out my order once it was ready. Back at my room, I found that the burger was actually really good even though it was overcooked. I specified that the burger be cooked medium, but it was well-done. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised to eat a burger this good at a seafood restaurant. Also the mashed potatoes was really good, comparable to what you can get at a fine dining restaurant, but without the hefty price.

Sunday 4/11
I woke up early to catch the Burnley v. Newcastle match at 4 am. Burnley loses 1-2. Then that was followed by the West Ham v. Leicester match at 6:05 am. West Ham stormed out to a 3-0 lead. I didn't catch the entire match as I wanted to get a head start home before traffic started building up. Leicester mounted a comeback, but came up short with West Ham winning 3-2. Before hopping on the freeway, I stopped by the nearby Chevron gas station to fill up the gas tank.

Fill up for for the drive home

During the drive home, I kept an eye on the Spurs v. Man United match that began at 8:30 am. I was hoping for the Spurs to win after they took a 1-0 lead off of Son's goal. However, the Spurs gave up 3 goals, losing 1-3.

Back at home, I watched the Sheffield United v. Arsenal match at 11 am. Of course, I wanted the Gunners to lose, but Sheffield United has been horrible this season, losing 0-3. For sure, they'll be relegated. After that, it was on to watching the final round of the Masters. Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese golfer to win the Masters with a 4 round total of -10.
