Walt Disney World Dopey Challenge 2023

Tuesday 1/3
After getting home from work, I ate dinner and took a shower before heading out to LAX for my direct flight out to Orlando for another year of the Dopey Challenge. However, it wasn't just another year, it was the 10th anniversary of the Dopey Challenge as well as the 30th anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon! This weekend was so popular that my regular crew/friends for this trip were unable to register for the races. They sold out like hotcakes!

For this trip, I ended up prepaying for parking at the newly built LAX Economy Parking structure. I mainly did so because it turned out to be significantly cheaper than my normal parking option over at the Renaissance Hotel. When I read up on other people's parking experience, I saw that the place was all automated. It reads your car's license plates. I was somewhat worried that I would have to scan my QR code since I don't have my front plate installed. I was worrying for nothing. When I pulled up, it read the rear plate, the ticket kiosk welcomed me with my name displayed on the screen, and opened the gate for me to get through. Easy peasy. I had also purchased an EV spot which made it even more convenient as those spots were very close to the shuttle pick-up and drop-off location. There were restrooms near the spot where you waited for the shuttle. After getting on the shuttle, I got off at terminal 4. The shuttles only stopped at the pink columns on the lower arrival level.

Well, it would turn out that my friend and fellow perfect Dopey was again on the same flight. I first meet him in person while waiting for the same flight last year heading to Orlando for the Dopey Challenge.

Once I boarded the plane, I attempted to watch Strange World, but I kept dozing off. The story and the characters were both a bit bland and not very engaging. Eventually, I gave up on that and tried to get some sleep.

Wednesday 1/4
The plane landed at Orlando MCO Airport at about 6:40 am. After using the restroom and take the APM over to the north terminal complex, my friend headed for his ride on one of the MEARS motorcoaches while I headed to the Budget car rental counter to pick up my car. It was the same lady that helped me last year. Once again, I had prepaid using my WorldMark credits and I was hoping that she wouldn't have problems again this year. Thankfully, that didn't happen, but she did try to get me to buy their insurance since she's never heard of Tesla having their own insurance coverage. I was given a gray Honda CR-V Hybird which was supposed to be in stall U16. When I got there, it was a different car. Before heading back to the counter, I checked the adjacent row and found my car in V17. These knuckleheads aren't very good at their jobs!

After I finished adjusting the mirrors and car seat, I drove the car out of the car rental parking structure and headed for one of my favorite McDonald's, the one located near the All Star resorts. Once I arrived, I ordered a $5 bacon egg cheese biscuit meal using the mobile app deal. While I was eating my breakfast, I tried to join the virtual queue for the official race merchandise at 8:30 am, but I totally forgot to get off of the McDonald's free WiFi. By the time I did that, I was put in boarding group 116. I supposed that I might have subconsciously sabotaged myself as I really didn't want to spend any more money than I already have! Just registering for the Dopey Challenge itself was a big expense!

Even though the expo wasn't scheduled to open until 10 am, I decided to drive over to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex early and just wait in line. Sure enough, after I parked my car and walked over, there was already a long queue to get inside for bib pick-up. They were actually letting us in a few minutes early. One of my friends, who was also a perfect Dopey, joined me in line just as I was nearing the entrance. For some reason the line for my bib range was the only long line in practically the whole place! My friend had already picked up everything before I even got my bib! In addition to the 2 bibs, I was given a 10th year Dopey Challenge rubber luggage tag which was the same design as the finisher medal and a small 30th year of the marathon poster. The 6 race shirts were pretty standard, but man, it was pretty cool to receive our gift for being a 10 year perfect Dopey! It was a metal lunchbox. Inside, there were 2 sugar cookies, a $65 Otterbox gift card, and a perfect Dopey trucker hat.

After that, we headed over to the VISA Athletic Center to check out the vendor booths. The first thing that I wanted to do was to ask one of the runDisney reps if they're going to continue recognizing our legacy status for the Disneyland Half Marathon that's finally returning in January of 2024. The perk that each legacy runner wanted was that guaranteed registration spot. The rep that I asked pulled out her binder that had their official answers to commonly asked questions. The answer to my question was that they are still working out the details. More information will be given out at a later time. With the registration opening on 2/14, I'm really hoping that they will make a decision sooner rather than later!

Eventually, we joined up with our other friends that were lucky enough to get a very early boarding group for the runDisney Merchandise Shop. Certain hot items were sold out within the first 30 minutes! One of those items was the Dopey Challenge Mickey ears.

After we went our separate ways, I drove over to the nearby Cracker Barrel to get lunch. Instead of getting my usual breakfast, I decided to go with their meatloaf. I always love a good meatloaf. I got green beans and corn as my 2 sides.

After I was done with my meal, it was time for me to head over to my vacation rental, WorldMark Kingstown Reef. On the drive over, I changed the radio preset to a country music station. Check-in was at 4 pm, but thankfully, my unit was ready when I arrived at 2 pm. I was assigned unit #2214 at the Gables building. I then stopped by the concierge to get my wristband room key. After giving me the usual tourist information, she started asking me questions about my ownership and for some reason, she thought that I needed to enroll in some loyalty program that I seem to already have. I was too tired to argue so I ended up opting for Friday at 12:30 pm to sign up for that program. I don't recall if we discussed there being a gift for my time because I thought it was just to enroll for that program and not the usual owner update. It turned out to be yet another owner update.

This was my first time staying in the Gables building. In all of my prior stays at this property, I was in the Veranda building. I went up to my room, unpacked, and went through my race packet items. Then I vegged out and dozed off for a spell while watching the EPL match between Palace and my Spurs. Thankfully, Tottenham easily beat them 4-0.

When I woke up, I drove over to the nearby Publix to buy a gallon of drinking water and a bag of frozen vegetables which I ate for a much healthier snack to balance out some of the fast food that I would be eating. Speaking of which, I then swung by McDonald's to pick up a quick dinner. I ordered a Quarter pounder with cheese for 20% off using the mobile app deal and a hamburger Happy Meal. The toy that I received was the Toad Kart.

After I was done with my meal, I laid out my flat runner, took a shower, and then called it a night.

Thursday 1/5
Yikes! I almost didn't wake up for the race today! I heard, but snoozed through all of my alarms. I woke up right about when I had planned to leave for the race. I threw on my running clothes and hopped in the car to head over to EPCOT for day #1 of the Dopey Challenge. It was a shaky start to this challenge for me as I started walking to the park entrance, I realized that I had left my race bib inside my car on passenger seat. I had to jog back to get it.

I made sure to get to the stage area in plenty of time for the perfect Dopey photo scheduled for 3:55 am. Unfortunately, for this year, the area in front of the stage was pretty small. As the designated photo time approached, there were enough of us that have gathered. However no one was really taking charge and we were kind of bumped by the State Farm group. They had the same idea of having their group photo there at the same time. Luckily, we were able to get the PhotoPass photographer to get a picture of us as well.

I was pretty wiped out by that little 5k! I really do not do well in high humidity. I had to take walk breaks during that last mile to let my body cool down. I bumped into my friend in the finisher chute. We walked over to the characters over at the stage. As soon as I didn't see Pluto there, I told me friend that I was heading back to my room to get some rest. When I got back to my room, I ate most of the stuff in my post race box and just vegged out on the couch while watching some early morning news.

Post race snacks and drinks

Originally, I was planning to drive out to the Kennedy Space Center. Instead I opted to just rest as running in humidity really wore me out. After my shower, I stopped by the concierge desk to see if I could get in on an owner update today instead of tomorrow. It was a different person at that station. He was able to get me in on an 8:30 am slot. I went back to my room to pass some time until it was time for my update. The rep that welcomed me was a pleasure to talk to, but all of the good ones are, especially if they're going to get you to make a purchase. However, at this point I was quite familiar with their tactics. I knew that they wanted me to use newly purchased credits to help pay for the new purchase by selling off those said new credits via Extra Holidays. Her tag team partner or sales manager was not as fun to talk to as her terrible botox and lip filler job was really distracting. My very disappointing gift for my hour plus of my time was a book of WorldMark properties. Had I known that this was going to be more of the same sales pitch instead of signing up for a loyalty program that I've already been on, I would've just said no.

After getting back to my room, I caught up on the first 2 episodes of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, season 2. I didn't feel like going out for lunch, so I just boiled some of the frozen vegetables to tide me over until dinner time. At 3 pm, I caught the EPL match between Chelsea and Man City. City wins with the match's only goal by Mahrez. I did try to set up Chromecast on the TV, but it kept failing when it got to the internet connection portion of the setup. I guess using the resort WiFi doesn't work.

Veggies

For dinner, I drove over to the nearby Chick-fil-A to pick up my standard prerace meal. On the mobile app, I ordered a market salad with grilled nuggets, Greek yogurt parfait with granola, and a cup of chicken tortilla soup.

Dinner from Chick-fil-A

As to be the routine for this trip, after I finished my dinner, I laid out my flat runner for tomorrow's race, took a shower, and called it a night. I ended up watching a few of my favorite episodes of Two and a Half Men.

Friday 1/6
Just to be safe, I had set up one extra alarm. Didn't need it since, I got up after the first one. I don't need to jeopardize my perfect legacy status for the Dopey Challenge by getting in a few more minutes of sleep.

Since I had arrived at the starting area a bit earlier than yesterday, I got in the short line to get a picture in front of the "30 years of running" background.

After getting my medal, I walked past the medical area and saw my friend icing his ankle. I chatted with him for a bit before moving along the finisher chute. After getting the Powerade, water, snack box, and banana, I headed over to the stage area to get a picture with Chip & Dale, Launchpad McQuack, and Monterey Jack. While waiting in line for a pic, I started talking to a couple. Turned out that we were both from Southern California. They told me that they live pretty close to LAX.

Then on the way back to my car, I stopped by the Mickey Magic Kingdom 50th year statue for a quick photo. I ended up talking to a couple of locals as one of them took the photo for me. They were also trying to run all of the marathon majors. We got on that topic because I saw that they had run the Chicago Marathon through the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Back at my unit, I ate the snack box contents for breakfast before taking a shower. At just before 10 am, I hopped in the car and headed over to ESPN Wide World of Sports to check out what was left of the official merchandise. I didn't find anything that I absolutely needed to buy. However, I was there just as Goofy and Dopey were coming out for pictures. I only waited in line for Dopey as I figured I would get Goofy some other time during the rest of this vacation.

Once I got my pictures with Dopey, I drove over to Cracker Barrel to get lunch. I got my usual country boy breakfast with sirloin steak, hash brown casserole, and grits. I returned to getting my eggs cooked sunny side up.

After I finished my meal, I decided to swing by Disney Springs to do some window shopping at World of Disney and to walk off my huge lunch. Per the usual, I found parking in the Orange Parking Garage. I found a couple of items that I would like to purchase, but then again, I passed since don't have much luggage space to take anything home with me.

At 3 pm, I caught the first half of the FA Cup match between Man United and Everton. Instead of watching the rest of the match, I decided to head over to Soupa Saiyan for an early dinner. My friend told me about this place back in 2018. I tried to check it out a few years back, but it was a failed attempt as the parking lot was packed. It looked like I had timed it correctly this time as there were available parking spots and there wasn't a line out the door. It was pretty convenient to place your order on one of their kiosks. I got their trifecta bowl which comes with shrimp, chicken, and brisket. I got it with ramen noodles. Unfortunately, when they brought out my bowl, the broth was lukewarm. It really needs to be piping hot! This restaurant was a good tribute to Dragon Ball, but I won't be coming back here for the food.

Back at my room, I laid out my flat runner for tomorrow's half marathon before taking a shower and calling it a night. I thought it would be perfectly appropriate to run it in my Disneyland 10th year legacy shirt. Per the usual with a Friday night, I watched some WWE Friday Night SmackDown!

I got to the start area early enough that they had yet to release runners on that one mile walk to the starting corrals. My friend wasn't starting in the same corral as me for the half marathon and marathon, but I located her in her corral after using the portapotties and before getting situated in mine.

I was running at about a 2:10 pace until I decided to stop for character photos. I ran into Carissa, the race announcer, along the course, but I couldn't keep up with her this year. I did manage to bump into her again in the finisher chute.

Carissa

I bumped into a fellow runner that was dressed up as young Simba. I told her that I was going to be dressed up as Russell from Up for tomorrow's marathon, so I should be easy to spot out on the course. I then made my way over to the characters to take some post race photos.

After getting back to my room, I got cleaned up and lounged around until it was time to head back to Disney Springs to get lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, Raglan Road Irish Restaurant & Pub. Normally, I want to eat their full Irish breakfast after running the marathon, but I wanted to make sure that they were still serving it. I was told last year that they only had that for brunch on weekends when I showed up on a Wednesday. I sat at the bar and the bartender that served me told me that they actually have earlier hours now where they serve breakfast starting at 9 am on weekends.

After finishing my meal, I headed back to my room to rest up for the big finale tomorrow. For dinner, I stuck with my usual race tradition and drove over to the McDonald's. On the mobile app, I ordered 2 double cheeseburgers while using the buy one, get a second one for 29 cents. I also got a small order of fries. It would seem that my favorite quarter pounder with cheese deal was now a thing of the past. I also boiled some veggies to load up for tomorrow's marathon.

After dinner, I laid out my outfit for tomorrow's race, took a shower, and called it a night. Unfortunately, the weather forecast was for a warm day, so it will be a full on picture day for me.

Sunday 1/8
I was somewhat dragging as I was getting ready to head to the race. I was starting to feel the onset of another respiratory illness. Good ol' Disney crud. Hopefully, it was not another bout of COVID. I took the same route to EPCOT as I did yesterday, but there was significantly more traffic this morning. Could leaving just 10 minutes later result in that much more traffic? It wasn't a big deal as I still got there with plenty of time to spare.

The walk to corrals A and B were much improved as they finally had us walking on the paved road instead of the wet grass as we had done for the past several years including yesterday's half marathon. Maybe they finally read our complaints and/or suggestions. I used one of the portapotties before heading inside the corral.

Finally, after missing my friends for all of the past 3 races, we were able to meet up in the corral. I still kept an eye out for one of my other friends, but unfortunately, I was never able to spot her. My friends and I were queued up within view of the 3:40 pace group in front of us.

It would turned out that the same couple that lived near LAX was queued up near me. They came by and said hi. I figured we would be running roughly the same pace as we kept running into each other. However, with the warmer weather and my outfit, I could only keep up with them for the first 2 miles, then I had to downshift into heat management. During one of my many walk breaks, the girl that was dressed up as young Simba recognized me and said hi before she ran off.

While it was a long day and a slow race even for me, it felt great to cross that finish line! I got my finisher medal and continued down the finisher chute. After getting the usual bottle of water and Powerade, I got another pair of marathon Mickey ears. Then I got my perfect Dopey lanyard in addition to the Goofy and Dopey Challenge medals. I didn't take a snack box or a banana this time. Once I made it out of the finisher area, I found a table to add the perfect lanyard to my Dopey medal.

My faster friends waited until I showed up about 2 hours after they had finished their races. Then they left because they were hungry. I stuck around and got in line for photos. I got pictures with Prince Ali Ababwa, Hercules, Jane, Megara, Tarzan, and Jasmine. I also bumped into @Blingwhore, who is no longer on any of the social media platforms.

After the photos, I drove back to my room and got cleaned up. I lounged around for about an hour before hopping in the car and driving over to Portillo's to pick up an early dinner. I placed my order ahead of time on the mobile app for 2 jumbo Chicago dogs and a large chocolate malt shake.

Monday 1/9
I got up pretty early, but it still felt like I had slept in as it wasn't to get ready for yet another race. At 7 am, I joined the virtual queue for the new Guardians of the Galaxy ride and was assigned boarding group 3! For breakfast, I ate the 2 perfect Dopey sugar cookies. Boy, were they tasty!

Boarding group 3!

I left my place at about 8:15 am to drive over to EPCOT one last time for this year's trip. It was still $25 for regular parking. During my walk to the park entrance, my app notified me that my boarding group was being called! However, for general tickets, the park doesn't open until 9 am. Thank goodness the boarding group was good for 1 hour, so I had until 9:42 am to get to the ride. The 1 day park ticket that I had was a barcode. Unfortunately, unlike Disneyland, here they need to scan a RFID card to interface with their system. The gate attendant had to assign me another card and associate a fingerprint with that card. I'm wondering if I could just use one of my old cards or my virtual card stored in GPay instead of getting another new card. I'll have to do some research on that.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
Once the rope dropped, I headed straight for the Guardians of the Galaxy ride. Without giving away any spoilers, it was indeed a very cool ride even though I've become increasingly tired of the old Guardians schtick. The best way that I could describe the ride was that it was a combination of Space Mountain at Disneyland in Anaheim and Crush's Coaster at Walt Disney Studios in Paris. It was a fun ride and definitely worthy of being a rope drop first ride. You can expect the lines to be very long once they open up the standby line.

Mission: SPACE Advanced Training Lab
We stood inside the first pre-launch room until a cast member came and got us. Supposedly that wasn't working, so they put us into another one. I'm going to assume that someone threw up.

Mission: SPACE

Test Track
Initially at rope drop, I overheard some cast members mentioning to other guests that the Test Track ride was down for the moment. It was open when I got here, so I went into the single rider line. I tried to customize a vehicle, but it wasn't saving on my park card.

Journey into Imagination with Figment
After I got off of the ride, I got in line to meet Princess Vanellope. Unfortunately, just as I got to the front of the line, the cast member informed us that they would need to "reset" the game. Good thing that the wait wasn't too long. I was hoping that Wreck-it-Ralph would also show up, but he was a no-show.

Remy's Ratatouille Adventure
After checking and failing to get on a walk-in spot for Le Cellier Steakhouse when they opened at 12 pm, I headed here to wait in the standby line. The queue might always be long for this ride, but I think that the 4D experience is one of the best out there!

Stitch Eiffel Tower

Le Cellier Steakhouse
As I got off of the ride, I noticed that the wait time for 1 person for walk-in on the app was only about 15 minutes. I hurried over and joined the wait list. There turned out to be no wait at all. As soon as I joined, I was sent a notification to check-in. Normally, I've only ever dined here when my friends took care of the reservations. After being seated, I ordered the Le Cellier signature poutine, NY steak with bread pudding, and an unsweetened iced tea. The steak was overcooked, but these days, I don't mind my steaks being cooked medium.

Man, that was a delicious meal!

After that big meal, I needed to do some walking! I noticed that off to the side in the shade, there was a meet and greet with Belle. I tried to get in line, but a cast member advised me that Belle will be taking a break and that I should come back at about 2:30 pm. I took a loop of the World Showcase and eventually made it back at that recommended time where I queued up with a couple of people. As 3 pm approached, the queue got quite long, but I was only about third in line. Belle asked if I was running in her upcoming Princess race. I chuckled and told her, unfortunately no, since I can't afford so many trips to Walt Disney World!

Frozen Ever After
I then headed over to Norway to get queued up for this ride. On my way there, we were stopped just before reaching China when I saw for the first time where the bridge was raised for a boat to go through! I never knew that it did that. It was a long wait, but I was already near the end of the list for the rides that I wanted to ride. After I finally got to the front of the line, I was given the first row in the boat. I guess the group of guys behind me were eager to be somewhere, so instead of waiting for the next boat, they ended up squeezing in with me. Sure, the more the merrier!

The Seas with Nemo & Friends
My friend had hopped over to EPCOT, so I walked over towards The Land to meet up with him at The Seas with Nemo & Friends.

Soarin'
That was followed up with riding Soarin'. The queue wasn't that long and it was one of the few times where I got to sit near the absolute center where the picture wasn't distorted.

L'Artisan des Glaces
After Soarin', we went searching for postcards. My friend usually buys them to send to his friends. That definitely has becoming a dying art. Along the way, we got in line to take pictures with Tinker Bell where she was inside her lantern. Eventually, we ended up in France where I got a single scoop of caramel fleur de sel at L'Artisan des Glaces while he continued his search in the nearby shops.

We then made our way to the exit where we stopped in at the Creations shop. He was able to finally locate some postcards and pay for them while using the mobile check-out option. We then went our separate way as my friend had a dinner reservation elsewhere and I was just pooped and ready to go back to my room and get some rest!

Tuesday 1/10
After checking out of my property just before 10 am, I drove down to Cracker Barrel one last time to eat breakfast. Once I was seated, I ordered my usual meal, the country boy breakfast with sirloin, hash brown casserole, and grits. My waitress forgot to bring me the biscuits and gravy, but that's ok, I really need to be losing some weight. After I was done and paid for me meal, I used the restroom before heading out. It was a first for me at this location, but there was a transient in the men's restroom cleaning himself off. I don't know the man's situation, but in general I think that this world has become too cruel especially for people that have been caught up in alcohol, drugs, or other forms of escape from reality.

My flight was later in the evening, so I drove over to Disney Springs to pass some time. After parking in the usual Orange Parking structure, I started window shopping. I eventually ended up at Swirls on the Water over by the Rainforest Cafe where I got a vanilla and pineapple Dole Whip swirl. After finishing my last Disney treat for this trip, I started heading back to my car and making my way over to the airport.

I bet these are flying off the shelves!

M&M's close enough? :)

Just as I had done last year, I drove over the Wawa just north of the airport to fill up the gas tank before returning the rental car. The employees at the car rental counter had reminded me that I needed to get fuel within a certain distance from the airport. With that said, I got a receipt after filling the tank. However, each time that I return the car, the person checking in my car never asked to see it. In the end, it's still based on an honor system.

Wawa

While packing my stuff, I was kind of stressing about the metal lunch box. I ended up packing my medals in that lunch box and putting it in the bin by itself during the TSA screening. It would turn out that it was unnecessary worrying on my part. Mine definitely wasn't the first one that went through TSA screening. When I reached my gate, I saw that my friend, Paul, was on the same flight. He was with a bunch of other fellow runDisney runners and RVMRVNNXRS. I hung out with them until it was time to board our flight.

Heading home

Drink and snacks

The plane landed in LAX just shortly after 8 pm. After getting off of the plane and using the restroom, I headed over to the pink column in the arrival level to wait for a shuttle back to the economy lot. It was a rather long wait for a shuttle to show up. Once I got back to my car, thankfully, it was smooth sailing all the way home. The exit gate automatically read my license plates and raised the arm for me to exit. I believe going forward, this will definitely be my go-to place for parking for all of my trips that I have flying out of LAX.
