Sydney Marathon 2023

Thursday 9/14
My flight with Hawaiian Airlines out of LAX was scheduled for 7 am. I had prepaid for parking in the LAX Economy Parking Structure. I'm really liking this option. So far, the place is still really new looking and has yet to be trashed. I really hope it stays that way. I arrived just before 5 am. It was a bit full, so I ended up parking up on the 3rd floor. After noting where I had parked, I took the shuttle over to the Tom Bradley International Terminal aka Terminal B. Since my final destination was an international location, I couldn't check-in with the mobile app or one of the self-service kiosks. After checking in with an airline agent, I noticed that my middle name was added on my boarding passes. I might have to start adding it to my tickets when I know that I'll be using my passport as my ID.

The first leg took me out to Daniel K Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. During the flight over, I watched the following movies:
  • Elemental: It was a pretty standard solid movie from Disney Pixar. It wasn't unique or all that memorable for me. It was just your typical Disney story about overcoming family struggles and a relation where opposites attract. Disney sure knows how to follow tried and true, money-making formulas. (7.5/10)
  • Creed III: These Rocky spinoff movies are nowhere as good. It was just another "unbeatable" opponent for Adonis Creed to fight. These fights are just not as epic as the first 4 Rocky movies. At the very least, Adonis in this one wasn't quite as whiny as he was in the other 2 movies. (6/10)

With a couple of hours to go before reaching our destination, I noticed that the flight attendants were moving about the cabin more than usual. Then one of them made an announcement looking for people with medical training. They had moved a passenger to the back of the plane for what I assumed was to receive some treatment. I think the passenger tried to get back to his original seat, but stopped at the middle lavatory to yak. Once the plane landed, we were instructed to stay in our seats. First, the flight attendants went down the aisle and opened each of the overhead compartments. Then another went down the aisle and sprayed something that I assumed was disinfectant into each compartment. Then they had that passenger with the medical issue deplane first. Then it was time for the rest of the passengers to get off. Our plane had a gate at the nicer recently remodeled Terminal 1. After finally getting off of the plane, I stopped at Starbucks next to Gate A14 to get a drink. I placed my order for a vanilla sweet cream nitro cold brew on the mobile app. Once I got my drink, I headed over to gate C9 to wait for my connecting flight out to Sydney.

Does this count as my annual visit to Honolulu? :)

The second leg took me out to Sydney Airport. I was fortunate to have no one sitting next to me for this longer leg which took about 11 hours. During this leg, I watched the following movies:
  • Elvis: I finally got the chance to watch this movie. I can see why many people wanted both this movie and Austin Butler to win an Oscar. I thought his performance was really good as young Elvis! On the other hand, I did not like the casting of Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker. Overall, it almost felt like I was watching a documentary. (8/10)
  • 8-Bit Christmas: I never heard of this film before this trip, but it was surprisingly enjoyable to watch mostly because of the nostalgia. It had a similar vibe as The Wonder Years or A Christmas Story. (7.5/10)
  • Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons: I was only able to watch approximately 80% of this movie before the entertainment system was shut off for landing. I caught the remainder on my flight home. This one was also surprisingly good. The animation was really good. I especially liked the character of Damian Wayne. However the story was pretty weak and predictable. (7.5/10)

Friday 9/15
Once our plane finally landed in Sydney, it was time for everyone to make that mad dash for passport check with the Australian Border Force. Although I had an ePassport, there was an issue with mine, so I couldn't use one of their SmartGates. I had to get in the general line to see an ABF agent. Once I got that sorted out, I made my way over to the International Airport Station to catch the T8 AirportLink train into the Central Business District to get to my hotel. I got off at the Museum Station. From there, I headed north on Elizabeth St and turned left at Park St to get to my hotel. It was the YEHS Hotel QVB on York St. It was about 9 pm when I had arrived at the hotel. I was checked into room #213. My room was very tiny, barely large enough to fit the bed. It reminded me of the ones that I had stayed in when I was in Tokyo, Japan.

Saturday 9/16
Leading up to the race, they had sent out an email for race participants to select a time for when to show up to the race expo. Even though they weren't going to verify your selection, I got ready and timed it so that I would show up at around my 10 am selection. The morning news on TV reported that the weather for Sunday was going to be unseasonably warm. I walked over to Town Hall Station to catch the T3 Bankstown Line down to Alexandria.

I got off at the St Peters Station and walked down to The Venue for the race expo. The walk was about 1.5 miles and took me just under 30 minutes. The expo was well organized and they did well to have the traffic flow in one direction. After collecting my race packet and checking out the official merchandise and vendor booths, it was time to head back.

Instead of going back to the same train station, I opted to catch a bus. I caught the 343 Bus Line near the corner of Gardeners Rd and Dunning Ave. I took that to the intersection of Elizabeth St and Liverpool St. Along the way back to my hotel, I stopped in at the McDonald's on George St just south of the Town Hall Station. Using one of the kiosks, I ordered their Classic Angus burger meal with a bottle a water as my drink. The kiosk that I used was out of paper, so I did not receive a receipt. When my food was ready, I had to convince the employee that that was my order. I must say that this was a very tasty burger. Aussie beef does taste better than the US beef back home!

It was a pretty warm day, so I got quite sweaty from all of the walking around. I took a shower and relaxed a bit before heading back out to catch a 2 pm matinee showing of Miss Saigon over at the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House. It was pretty cool to see that the finish line for tomorrow's marathon had already been partially set up. Once I went through the metal detectors and had my ticket scanned, I got in line to get a picture in front of the Miss Saigon backdrop. Then I started making my way to the back for door 25. I had purchased a pretty cheap ticket with a seat up in the circle section. My seat was in row M with only 2 rows behind me. I ended up meeting a fellow marathoner named Jim, who was also a member of the Marathon Globetrotters. We were sitting in the same row.

If I recall correctly, this was only the third time that I've seen this musical. To be honest, this has never been close to being my favorite musical. Besides the sexually suggestive content, it does have an overall good message and the cast always puts on a great show. However, none of the songs are very memorable. The one and only song that I can remember and recognize is Bui Doi. Each time, the person playing the engineer always steals the show.

After the show, I made the walk back to my hotel. Along the way, I stopped at a 7-Eleven to buy some drinks for tomorrow's race. The prices were on the pricier side, but I didn't have time to explore and I was feeling pretty tired. It was A$14.40 for 2 1L bottles of water plus 600 mL of Powerade. I also swung by the same McDonald's that I had visited earlier to pick up dinner. I got a Grilled Chicken Deluxe and a Quarter Pounder. I ate my meal back at my room, took a shower, and laid out my flat runner before calling it a night.

Sunday 9/17
I got ready and left my room at about 5:15 am to catch a train over at Town Hall Station. Trains were free on race day. They left the ticket fare gates open. There was no need really to figure out which train to catch. Every runner was headed to the same platform. Having taken the train for some big city marathons, I knew to get to one of the end cars where there's more room. It was a very short ride over to Milsons Point Station. The train made a longer stop at that station in order for everyone to get off. There was a huge bottleneck at the stairway to exit the station. Once out of the station, everyone made their way down to Bradfield Park. When I arrived, runners in the half marathon had just taken off. I ended up in one of the many queues to use a portapotty.

Here were the start and cut-off times for each distance:
  • Half Marathon: 5:45 am - 5:57 am
  • 10k: 6:05 am - 6:30 am
  • Wheelchair Marathon: 7:08 am
  • Marathon: 7:10 am - 7:45 am
  • 3.5 km Family Run: 8:05 am - 8:25 am

Start was delayed

The start of the marathon was delayed by about 10 minutes. There were the usual groans from the runners in the starting corral. It was going to be a warm day, so I didn't set any time goals. They gave us a very generous 7 hour time limit, so there's no real reason to hurry. I made sure to just run by feel as I've had a history of doing very poorly in warm weather. I reached the halfway point in 2:33:58 and I was definitely struggling. I switched over to mostly power walking for the second half to try and not overheat. It didn't help that we ran about 6 miles in the very exposed Centennial Park. Parts of the course in the park overlapped and was a bit too narrow for a large marathon. My legs eventually cramped up, so the last 3 miles were quite rough. I ended up chatting with an Arsenal supporter during the out and back in the Royal Botanic Garden. It's always nice to chat with people about football, but it was mostly to help distract me from the struggle. I tried to run the final stretch, but I couldn't muster up much of a run.

Finish line just ahead

That was a brutal race

Finish: 5:59:55

After crossing the finish line and receiving my finisher medal, I was feeling really out of it. I was feeling a bit dizzy and close to passing out, so I tried to keep moving and look for some post race food. Unfortunately, all I got was a bottle of water. I bumped into my friend who had finished ahead of me. We went to go look for our finisher shirt and some post race food. We found the shirts, but post race food was nowhere to be found. We did come across a table with cups of electrolyte drink. I drank a warm cup before we continued over to the gear bag area. After my friend picked up his bag, he came across an unopened banana that was abandoned by some other runner. If this race is aspiring to become a World Marathon Major, they should learn from the NYC Marathon where they give out pre-bagged recovery food. That way they can control how much gets pass out as some finishers will end up hoarding all of the food. That's actually quite common when you have a half marathon taking place at the same time.

My legs were feeling quite crampy even after getting back to my hotel. My feet kept cramping up when I was removing my shoes and socks. Finally after I took a shower and got cleaned up, I thought that I would relax a bit before going back out to get dinner. Well, I pretty much was knocked out for the night as I never did go back out to get food. I did wake up in middle of the night where I ate my last CLIF Bar and drank a bunch of water before going right back to sleep. That heat really wiped me out!

Monday 9/18
To be honest, even though I had slept so much after the race yesterday, I was still feeling really wiped out. I could tell from my urine that my body was still pretty dehydrated and was definitely not fully recovered. That heat really did a number on me! However, I wasn't about to waste another day doing nothing after flying all this way to Australia. I got ready and left my room at a little after 8 am. Since I was headed north for the Circular Quay, I walked up the street on York St over to the Binge Kitchen to get breakfast. However when I got there, they looked open, but there weren't any customers and everyone that looked like an employee was busy doing something. I wasn't about to find out what their deal was, so I left for my backup spot, the McDonald's over at the Westfield Sydney shopping mall. When I got there, I saw that there weren't any ordering kiosks and the one employee out front looked super busy. I went outside the mall and walked over to the McDonald's further up the street on George St. Using one of the kiosks, I ordered their Big Brekkie Burger meal with a small iced mocha. I found out that the café station near the entrance was for their coffee drinks. That's where I had to pick up my drink. I actually wanted regular black coffee, but the screen was very glitchy and wouldn't let me scroll down to see all of the available selections. The Big Brekkie Burger was a bit much for me. They pretty much threw the kitchen sink into it. It had a sausage patty, hash brown, ham, and egg between 2 buns.

After I was done with my breakfast, I made the walk up to the wharf to catch a ferry ride over to Manly Wharf to check out Manly Beach and The Corso. Similar to the trains, paying for the ferry ride was simple and convenient using Google Pay. It turned out to be nearly perfect timing as the ferry was scheduled to depart within the next few minutes. It was a pretty enjoyable ferry ride over to Manly where I was treated to some awesome views of the harbour and the surrounding area.

After arriving and getting off of the ferry at Manly Wharf, I made my way across the street and onto The Corso. The vibe reminded me of Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii. Everything was pretty touristy, but still a nice spot to do a little bit of window shopping and stretching out the legs after a marathon. I made my way over to Manly Beach. If you know me, you know that I don't like sand. I pretty much stuck to the pathway along the beach. I headed south on this path until it turned into the waterfront path called, Marine Parade. It would appear that quite a few people come out here to walk, run, or ride their bicycles. It was a bit sunny and warm, so I took some walk breaks to take pictures. I turned around and headed back to The Corso once I had reached Shelly Beach.

Poodles no, noodles yes :)

Once I had returned to The Corso, I stopped at Butter Boy to get a cookie since it smelled so good! The cookie that I got was their Salted Caramel & Macadamia. I found a spot nearby to sit down and to enjoy my cookie. I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but boy was that one delicious cookie!

Salted Caramel & Macadamia

As it got closer to noontime, it only got warmer. I was already out of water, so I ducked into the Coles Manly Peninsula on Wentworth St to buy some water. Also it was nice to be inside where it was well air-conditioned. The price of water here was much cheaper than what I had paid at 7-Eleven. It was only A$1.80 for the 2 1.5L bottles. I thought about buying some Vegemite, but I doubt that I could get it past airport security on my carry-on bag.

1.5L bottle of water x2

I wanted to have lunch at Manly Grill, but they did not open until 12 pm. I walked around The Corso area where I checked the menu of a few of the other surrounding restaurants until I was tired. I was still feeling pretty pooped from yesterday's marathon in the unseasonable heat. I finally found a spot to sit down to wait until they were open. Once they were, I was seated outside with a nice view of Manly Beach and the ocean. After looking over their menu, I ordered the 200g Gippsland Eye Fillet steak cooked medium rare with chargrilled broccolini and added 3 chili garlic prawns. This was a nice post marathon meal.

After I was done, I waited for the waiter to bring me my check so that I could pay for my meal. Apparently, things are a bit different in Australia. Instead I just had to go to the cashier near the entrance of the restaurant to settle my bill. When I tapped with Google Pay, the guy asked if I wanted to leave a gratuity. This was the only time during my trip that I was asked. I had read that it was not customary for people to leave gratuity in Australia. I guess that's what happens when you eat at a touristy spot. I gave him 10%. I was feeling pretty darn pooped, so I started heading for the wharf to catch a ferry back to Circular Quay.

Along the way to the wharf, I stopped at the Butterboy again to buy their button-up shirt. My purchase came with another complimentary cookie and an iced coffee. It was a good thing that I didn't get any dessert for lunch! This time I went with their Nutella chocolate chip cookie

Just as before, I arrived at the wharf and paid for the fare just minutes before the next ferry was scheduled to depart. The outdoor seats were pretty much all taken by the time I got on so I opted for a window seat inside. Along the way back to my hotel, I noticed a Malaysian restaurant that was only about a block away from my hotel that piqued my interest.

Manly Wharf

Back at my room, I relaxed a bit, watched a bunch of TV, and continued to rehydrate as my urine was still somewhat dark. I looked up that Malaysian restaurant, Ipoh Town on York. The menu looked interesting, so I decided to go there later for dinner. It was a Malaysian hawker, a very casual place to grab something to eat. When I arrived, I went straight to the counter and placed my order. I ordered their Nasi Lemak with beef rendang. As advertised on their menu, it's their signature dish. This is Malaysia's national dish. It's a fragrant coconut rice dish served with peanuts, crispy anchovies and pickled vegetables. With this dish, you also have the option to get it with chicken curry. I never had Malaysian food before, but this breakfast dish was very similar to what Taiwanese people eat. I thought it was not bad. I'm pretty sure it's good for Sydney and you would most definitely get something better at Malaysia. Once I was done, I brought my plate and utensils to the counter.

Tuesday 9/19
Unfortunately, my flight out of Sydney wasn't until 9:40 pm and my hotel had a checkout time of 10 am, so I needed to find stuff to do to pass the time before heading over to the airport. I got ready and checked out of my room at just before 10 am. Since I had my bags with me, I didn't feel like going too far or hopping on a ferry for some sightseeing. Instead I just checked out the nearby Queen Victoria Building, Kings Comics, and The Galeries.

The Queen Victoria Building had many shops inside and with several restaurants located on various floors (see centre map). I wasn't the only one there taking pictures of the building structure and features. It was unique and elegant. The basement floors allowed underground access to The Galeries shopping mall as well as the Town Hall Station. That was a nice option as it was pretty sunny and hot outside. Before walking around inside, I stopped at the Manon Brasserie to get some breakfast. It wasn't too busy when I got here, so they were able to seat me inside without any wait. They had outdoor seating available if that's your preference. After looking over the menu, I ordered their Croque Forestier. It had mushrooms, Gruyère, fried egg, and béchamel. I had a cup of coffee to go with it. My food looked appetizing and tasted delicious. Service was also good. This was a nice French restaurant where you could enjoy a nice quiet meal. Even though there was a ton of foot traffic around QVB, it wasn't overly noisy.

The next place that I stopped at was Kings Comics. Even though it was only about a block away. I couldn't wait to go inside as it was really sunny and hot. How did I manage to survive the heat during that marathon? Besides the air conditioning, it was nice to come inside here for a little bit of nostalgia. It reminded me of the days of yesteryear when I was actively collecting comic books. It made me want to go home and dig out my old comic books. I also wanted to check out their Spider-man statue display. Besides that awesome piece, they had many other very cool items. If I were a local, I definitely would be visiting this place on a regular basis.

Spidey!

After that, I went over to The Galeries shopping mall. This was a more modern looking mall. I checked out each floor (see centre map) before finding a spot to sit down and relax. They had a food gallery down at the lower ground floor. I had to wait until 11:30 am for Yayoi Restaurant to open which was up on floor 1. I was seated at one of the seats at an island counter. The interactions with restaurant staff was very minimal. I placed my order on the tablet that's mounted in front of me. It displayed the status of my order and informed me when it was about to arrive. I ordered their wagyu sukiyaki set meal and a roasted green tea. Once my food was brought out, one of the waitstaff refilled my tea. The sukiyaki came with a bowl of miso soup, a bowl of rice, an egg, vegetables, and some daikon slices. It was your standard teishoku. The food was good and if I had a place like this near work, I would be coming here every day. Eating here reminded me of being in Japan and made me long to go back. The place was pretty packed when I was done and had gotten up to pay at the register.

After I was done with lunch, I went upstairs to floor 2 to check out the Kinokuniya 紀伊國屋書店. They're a Japanese chain bookstore. I've been to their locations in Los Angeles, CA and Seattle, WA. My goodness, they had quite the extensive manga selection! Of course all of the super popular ones were available. If I had one of these bookstores closer to where I live, I would be giving them a lot of my money!

I then headed south along George St over to the Event Cinemas to catch a movie. The only movie that I wanted to see was The Equalizer 3. I bought a ticket using one of the kiosks. Unfortunately, the movie didn't start until 3:15 pm. I had a couple of hours to pass. Honestly, I was still fatigued from that marathon on Sunday, so I didn't want to walk anywhere. I found an open seat in front of the Ten Fourteen Bubble Tea shop and used the available free WiFi to pass the time. While waiting, I observed a lot of junior high and high school kids loitering in that area. Most looked to be good kids, but boy, there were some that were acting like those little shits that had never received a good spanking! When it finally came time to go inside the theater, the employee told me that my theater was downstairs. He didn't point me in the right direction, so I thought maybe it was the stairs that I saw on the way in. That wasn't it as it led down to the pool hall and arcade. I went back up and pushed on a set of glass doors that led to another area which had the stairs leading down to the theater. The seat that I had picked was okay, but the theater seating was very outdated for movie theaters these days. I guess you get spoiled when you're used to those big comfortable recliner seats. So the movie was your standard Equalizer movie with Denzel Washington. Overall, it was entertaining and enjoyable if you're okay with gun violence. Who doesn't like watching some douchebag members of the mafia get what they deserved by one single badass man? Personally, I thought this was the weakest one out of the three. Denzel seemed to be rocking the dad bod now while still kicking ass. (6.5/10)

After the movie was over, I walked over to the Museum Station to catch the T8 line down to the airport. I exited the train at the International Airport Station. I then headed over to the Hawaiian Airlines counter to check in and get my boarding passes. Before heading to security check and customs, I stopped at the Hungry Jack's to get dinner. This was their version of Burger King back home. I joined their queue and when it was my turn, I ordered their Whopper with cheese small meal with a bottle of water. Once I received my order, I found an empty table to enjoy my meal. I must say again that Aussie beef tastes better than what we have in the States. I'm not a fan of the Whopper, but that was a delicious burger.

Whopper with cheese small meal

After getting through security screening, I checked out some of the duty-free items. In particular, I was interested in purchasing some unique Australian jerky. I was tempted to purchase a variety pack which had crocodile, emu, kangaroo, buffalo, and beef jerky. It was a bit pricey and I wasn't that curious, so I passed. I was also tempted to purchase the Lego Infinity Gauntlet which I also passed. Next, I checked out a McDonald's that had a very unique delivery system. You don't see the kitchen, but when orders were ready, they get sent down an interesting chute. This was somewhat similar to what I had seen at the McDonald's next to the Paddington Train Station in London. Then along the way over to my gate, I came across a somewhat freaky giant face that made different facial expressions.

When we were done with the boarding process, one of the flight attendants made an announcement that this flight into Honolulu would be the captain's final flight before retirement. The whole plane gave him an ovation. Besides finishing the last parts of the Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons movie, I only managed to watch 2 movies for this flight out to Honolulu. Thankfully, the length of the flights were shorter heading home. My row partner was an older lady that turned out to be pretty knowledgeable of the southern California area. We had a pretty good conversation until she probably took something to help her go to sleep. She was KO'd at one point with one of her legs eventually encroaching into my space. I nudged her a few times, but she never reacted or moved. She was lights out. She only came to when the plane was making its final descent down into HNL.
  • Black Adam: Yikes. This was a horrible movie. I kept having to rewind the movie as I kept falling asleep. Dwayne The Rock Johnson's acting was terrible. Was he trying to do an accent? Don't waste your time with this one. Life is too short to be watching crap like this. The only thing that I liked was Aldis Hodge as Hawkman. (3/10)
  • Encanto: I finally got to watch this movie. I can see why everyone was raving about this movie back when it first came out in 2021. I liked the story, animation, and the songs. This film was pretty much a perfect example of Disney's bread and butter. (8.5/10)

I believe this was my first time entering back into the US via Honolulu, Hawaii. Going through customs was pretty easy and relaxed. During the questioning by the agent, we talked about me going to Sydney to run the marathon. He asked if I had won the race. I told him that I was happy to just have finished the race as the weather was really warm. He told me to that I should still tell my family that I had won the race. :) Unfortunately, the process took everyone outside of the secure area. That meant I had to go through security screening once again. Before doing so, I went outside and walked over to terminal 1.

Once I had gotten through the TSA security checkpoint, I headed over to gate A4 for my flight home. Since it was around lunch time, I decided to get something at Mauka Market. The place was pretty packed, but I found an open spot at the bar that was designed for those in a wheelchair. The chair wasn't quite high enough, so it was a bit awkward. However, beggars can't be choosers. After looking over the menu, I ordered their Loco Moco. It was a grilled 8 oz beef patty with steamed furikake rice, gravy, fried eggs, mac salad, scallion, and crispy onions. It was pretty standard and not bad for some local food while waiting at the airport. The service was nice and friendly.

Loco Moco

We had our bags screened for agricultural items as each of the boarding groups were called up to board the plane. I felt like a total zombie on this flight. I listened to some tunes and tried to get some shut-eye instead of attempting to watch another movie.

The plane landed at LAX at just after 11 pm local time. Unfortunately, we landed at one of the West Gates of the Tom Bradley International Terminal. That meant that it would be a very long ass walk out of the terminal. Luckily, it wasn't too long of a wait for the shuttle to arrive for a ride back to my car. It took longer than I had hoped to find my car since the numbering of the stalls had no rhyme or reason. Once I started heading home, I noticed that my car navigation had me heading north up La Cienega Blvd to the 10 freeway instead of the usual 105 route. Since there might be some major accident or overnight freeway work on the 105, I decided to go with it. It turned out to be a nice drive home.
