Star Wars the Dark Side Challenge 2017

4/20 Thursday
After work, I got a ride from my coworker over to the train station. After taking public transportation for a while, it was quite clear that trains were very unreliable. They are usually late until you, yourself are running late, then they'll be sure to leave right on time! I have a story about that that I'll share with you later in this recap. I've become increasingly disappointed with Amtrak, so I took the Metrolink train into Union Station. From there I caught the LAX Flyaway bus over to LAX.

Metrolink Irvine to Union Station: $10
LAX Flyaway: $9.75

My red eye flight with JetBlue was scheduled to leave at about midnight so I had plenty of time to pass at the terminal. There was quite a bit of construction going on in terminal 3. It looked like they'll be putting in a Shake Shack which will be a great addition to any terminal. I didn't want to spend too much money on dinner, so I bought a pre-made sandwich from Angel City Brewery. I didn't realize that they had a bar here. It would've been nice back when I was still drinking. The sandwich tasted pretty good, but the tomatoes made the bread really soggy.

Quick dinner

After finishing the sandwich, I walked around the terminal to check out the rest of the construction progress. I picked up some snacks and water before finding a spot for the long wait. The flight was delayed a bit and eventually I ran into a couple of my friends that were also headed out to Orlando for the Star Wars races.

4/21 Friday
As soon as we landed and got off of the plane, I started heading for the Disney Magical Express bus. I made a quick pit stop at a restroom before heading down to the first floor of side B. The escalator down was blocked off, so I had to use the elevator. Once I reached the welcome center, they scanned my magic band and directed me to one of the lanes. I actually had to hurry as the motorcoach leaving for Caribbean Beach was about to head out. It made a stop at Art of Animation and Pop Century before arriving at the Caribbean Beach resort.

Custom House

Originally I was planning to head to the expo expecting my room to not be ready. However I received a text with my room information, so I set out to find my building. The layout of the resort was somewhat hard to figure out as there were so many trees. At first I was at the Custom House bus stop which was the wrong place to wait. I had to cross over to the nearby bus stop at Barbados. That bus stop was very crowded and I had just missed the internal resort bus, so I decided to walk it. I had to use Google Maps, but eventually I found the trail around the lake and followed that over to Trinidad South, the southernmost point of the resort. It was a pretty long walk, but at least it was a scenic walk.

My room was in building 38 of Trinidad South. It was one of the pirate-themed rooms. The room decor was awesome, good enough to be a part of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride! I especially liked the bed frame and barrel shaped outer casing for the mini fridge. These rooms would be perfect for any kid! Yo ho yo ho, a pirate's life for me!

I took a quick shower and relaxed a bit before heading back out to go to the race expo. There was a nearby bus stop for Trinidad South where I waited for the expo bus which would take me over to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. This would also be the bus stop where I would catch the morning bus for the races.

The expo was pretty standard for the Walt Disney World races. First I went into the HP Field House to collect my race bib and shirts before heading over to the J Center (formerly known as Jostens Center) for the expo. I checked out the official merchandise and thankfully didn't find a thing that I'd considered a must purchase item. On the way out I checked out the cantina which was a nice addition that would replace the area that had been used for guest speakers. The prices were pretty steep. Even so I was tempted to buy a pineapple soft serve which came in a Chewbacca Stein.

Wretched hive of scum and villainy!

25 dollars?! We can almost buy our own ship for that! :)

I hopped on the bus which took me back to Caribbean Beach. I had eaten yet, so I decided to go look for lunch. I thought the bus would stop at the Old Port Royale stop, but it didn't. So I got off at Trinidad North and walked over. None of the food looked too appealing, but I ended up getting the Caribbean salad with chicken at the Montego's Deli. It was an underwhelming salad, but it was good enough to tide me over to my next meal.

Back at my room, I went through the expo haul which consisted of nothing but the essentials. There wasn't even the usual Clif Bar in the bag! The shirts were pretty decent this year. Although the designs were a bit small, I liked them better than last year's designs.

I watched a bunch of TV and ended up dozing off a bit. I was super tired, but it was getting kind of late, so I had to muster up the will to go out and find dinner. First I laid out my flat runner for tomorrow's race. The weather would be super humid, but I went with a cotton standard black and white storm trooper t-shirt. I can never race well in high humidity, so I might as well look good! :)

On the way over to the Old Port Royale food court, I took the underpass instead of crossing the street. They had put up a figure pole at each end. It was for pedestrian traffic only, so they could be there possibly to stop carts and bicycles.

For dinner, the only menu that interested me was at the Bridgetown Broiler. They had the standard baked chicken, carved turkey, and grilled salmon that you can find at Disney food courts. However I wanted to try something new, so I had their shrimp curry over ice. I didn't expect much, but it was not bad!

4/22 Saturday
Getting up for these east coast races are tough! I forced myself to get up at the sound of the first alarm instead of snoozing and waiting for the backup alarms. I didn't want to run the risk of missing my race! I got ready and made my way over to the bus stop. The bus was pretty full by the time it had picked us up. Some of the folks at the next stop had to stand.

This was the first Walt Disney World race where we were dropped off at the Magic Kingdom parking lot. Everything was well organized. For security check at this race, they didn't consider a race belt a bag, so I had to get into the no-bag line. The lines were pretty long for the photo ops with Star Wars characters, so I bypassed that until after the race. I did try to get in on the Stormtrooper crew photo, but just like last year, I was a tad late. I then headed for the corrals. I used one of the portapotties next to the corrals before going in. I did a quick warm-up before heading to the front to look for familiar faces.

10k start line

I must have been itching to go as I ran the first mile faster than I had wanted. It was a minute faster than I had expected for the perceived effort. I took that as a good sign that my legs were getting much better, but I slowed it down a bit for the next mile. I started developing the headache that I normally get when running in high humidity during mile 3. I had to pull over for a walk break. I would go on to take 8 more walk breaks. I was pouring water over my head every chance that I could.

After collecting my awesome finisher medal and getting my post race drinks and snacks, I made my way over to the photo op lines for the Star Wars characters. I took a picture with Vader, Kylo Ren, BB-8, and Captain Phasma. I skipped the line for Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt. I didn't realize that they had a board with the approximate waiting times until I was leaving.

After getting back to my room, I got cleaned up and ate my post race goodies while contemplating about going to one of the parks. Since I was feeling pretty exhausted, I ended up taking another nap instead. I woke up to go eat lunch at Disney Springs. As soon as I got off of the bus, I noticed that there were many runDisney banners up with fun facts. I first checked out Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar. I saw a pretty interesting video on the story behind the place. Unfortunately it was more for drinking as they had a very limited appetizer section on their menu.

I then walked over to my favorite restaurant, Raglan Road Irish Pub. Since I was by myself, I went straight into the bar area and looked for a seat. All of the good seats were taken, but I was able to find a seat. However the view of the live dancing and entertainment was blocked from where I was sitting. I ordered the usual Full Irish Breakfast and an iced tea. The bartender also brought out some Irish Soda Bread for me to snack on while I waited for my food.

Full Irish breakfast

It was then back to my room to relax and watch a bunch of NBA playoff games for several hours. I laid out my flat runner for tomorrow's race before heading back out for dinner. Just as I shut my room door, I remembered that I had forgotten to wear my magic band! I had my wallet with me so I could still pay for dinner. I figured that I would just swing by the custom house after dinner to get another room key.

Half marathon flat runner

For dinner I ate at the Bridgetown Broiler over at the Old Port Royale again. I got their ropa vieja. It was some pretty good stuff! It literally translates to old clothes in Spanish, but it's stewed beef with vegetables. It was loaded with flavor and went well over rice.

Ropa vieja

Over at the custom house, I spoke with one of the cast members at the online check-in counter. After she saw my ID, she gave me another magic band. Apparently she had trouble programming it for my room. After she was done, I made the walk back to my room in the counterclockwise direction just to mix things up.

Aruba, Jamaica... oooh, I wanna take ya!

The magic band wouldn't open my room, so I headed back towards the custom house one more time. This time I went to the bus stop and waited for the internal resort bus. The lady that helped me was extremely apologetic as she saw me walking up to the counter. I believe she got her manager to help out. Once the magic band was properly programmed, she got one of the drivers to drive me over to my building in case it still didn't work. Thankfully it worked this time.

4/23 Sunday
The buses started running 30 minutes earlier than they did yesterday, so I woke up and got ready 30 minutes sooner. Once again I skipped the photo ops with the characters. They had the corral area closed until about an hour before the race start. I waited there with a bunch of other eager runners.

When I got into the corral, I made my way up to the front. I sat down and waited for a while before some of my friends showed up. One of them was running in costume which was a very cool mashup of Russell from Up and Darth Maul!

Darth Russell! @blingwhore

I made sure to not run that first mile too fast. However it was still too fast as I felt pretty fatigued during the next mile. The headache from the high humidity was starting earlier than yesterday. Even though it turned out to be a lousy race on my part, I liked the new course. It had many of the portions of the Walt Disney World Marathon course in January. The course hit Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot. The left ankle got pretty sore in the final miles, so it was a slow jog to the finish line. It was good to hear a shout out from Rudy, one of my favorite race announcers!

The humidity really did a number on me. After picking up my half marathon medal, I made my way through the finisher chute picking up the usual bottle of water and Powerade. I then made my way to the challenge tent where they confirmed my identity before awarding me any challenge medals. I assumed that the volunteers would give me whatever medals I earned. I was given the Kessel Run medal, but not the Dark Side Challenge medal. I was so out of it that I continued to walk through and picked up a banana and snack box. I then got my bag from gear check and made my way over to take a picture with Boba Fett. A runner from Germany was asking me questions about the Kessel Run. She wanted to know where in the movie was it mentioned. She was going to go home and re-watch it. It was during our conversation where all of a sudden I realized that I didn't get my Dark Side Challenge medal. I congratulated her on her races, hopped out of the line, and headed back in an attempt to go get my medal. I went as far as I could before a volunteer stopped me. I pleaded my case. She tried to send me away to the information tent, but I further pleaded my case so she escalated the matter to the volunteer leader where it finally made it to a runDisney employee. I probably looked honest and believable to her, so she grabbed a medal and hung the medal around my neck. I thanked her for taking my word for it and that the humidity really turned my head to mush. She was very understanding.

After getting all of my medals, I decided to just skip the photos with the characters and go back to my hotel room. Once again I ate some of the snacks and drank the Powerade. I was feeling pretty lethargic, but I had to hop in the shower and get ready to check out of my room. After I packed up, I caught the internal resort bus over to the custom house to wait for the Magical Express motorcoach for my ride to the airport.

Once I arrived at the airport, I made my way up to the ticket counter floor. I was feeling pretty hungry, so I decided to grab a quick lunch at McDonald's before going through security. I got the usual Big Mac, french fries, and 10 piece chicken McNuggets. I used the app for the fries to be free. The girl that took my order didn't bother to give me any sauce for the McNuggets. It's a good thing that I'm fine with eating them plain.

McDonald's

I almost got in line for the TSA before I realize that I still needed to print out my boarding pass. I've gotten way too accustomed to having my pass on my phone. Also it took me a while to realize that Frontier Airlines was on side A.

It ended up not necessary to hurry with my meal. The flight was eventually delayed for about 3 hrs as the maintenance crew deemed our original plane unsafe, so we had to wait for another plane to come in from another flight. When it came time to board the plane, it was clear that the natives were getting restless. Some of the pre-boarders were getting into a loud verbal argument with the gate attendant.

I quickly found out why Frontier Airlines flights were so cheap even having to pay for carry-on baggage. Everything was so small. The seats were small, as was the space underneath the seat in front of you for your personal item. The tray table was the size of an envelope, definitely not big enough for a laptop. The seats also did not recline, so it was next to impossible to fall asleep. The girl sitting in the middle seat must have a bladder the size of a pea. Every so often, she would tap me on my shoulder to let her out. So even if I managed to start dozing off, I would be awoken by her.

Once I landed in LAX and had gotten off of the plane, I made a quick stop at the restroom before heading out. I went outside and waited at the median to catch the LAX Flyaway bus over to Union Station to catch an Amtrak train. It took forever for the bus to show up as it had encountered heavy traffic enroute. We then ran into heavy traffic as we entered into Downtown LA. The bus driver did the best he could, weaving in and out of traffic as there was most likely a car accident, but we didn't get to the Patsaouras Transit Plaza until about 10:05 pm. The last Amtrak train for the Pacific Surfliner route was scheduled to leave at 10:10 pm. Some of the people on the bus were also trying to catch the same Amtrak train. They had luggage in the cargo hold and was shouting profanities at the driver to open up the doors. The driver wasn't supposed to do that. They actually have another guy at the plaza where it was his job to take care of the luggage. I didn't stick around to see what happened. I got my ticket scanned and headed for the train tunnels. It was just leaving as I got there. A few riders ahead of me were yelling at the train to wait, but it just kept going... right on time. Oh well, on to plan B. I took the Metro Gold Line all the way out to Azusa and was going to grab a Lyft ride home from there. Along the way, I was able to get somebody to come out and pick me up at the station. Public transportation is not 100% reliable since it does not run around the clock.

Hollywood Half Marathon 2017

Friday 4/7
Originally I was going to get in early for work so I could leave early to get into Hollywood to maybe catch a showing of Beauty & the Beast at El Capitan before it got too late, but I ended up having jury duty where I didn't have the option of leaving early. As soon as I got home from that, I grabbed my stuff and headed out. Once again I took public transportation. It was cheaper and I didn't have to deal with the traffic, but it definitely took longer. I didn't get into Hollywood until almost 9 pm. As soon as I got off of the Metro rail train at Hollywood and Vine, I was welcomed with the smell of reefer smoke. From there it was a short walk over to the hotel, Hollywood Le Bon Hotel. I checked into my room and dropped off my bag before going back out to pick up something to eat.

I walked a couple of blocks over to Smoke's Poutinerie to pick up dinner. Apparently my eyes were bigger than my stomach. I got the wow size of their country style chicken poutine. Since it was already pretty late, I should've just gotten their snack or meal size. I took it back to my hotel room. Eating all of the fries was the hard part. I barely finished it all and I was stuffed! Before going to sleep, I laid out my usual Superman flat runner that I've worn for this race.

Saturday 4/8
The bed was super lumpy and creaky, but fortunately I was able to catch some Z's. I woke up, got ready, and left my hotel room at about 4:30 am. It's always a bit interesting walking through Hollywood that early in the morning. Along the way, I swung by the finish line area where I saw them setting up. That was reassurance that the race would actually take place. I certainly had my doubts when they informed us that there would be no expo on Friday.

Once I arrived at Hollywood and Highland, I saw the familiar Hollywood starting line arch. Nearby, just in front of El Capitan was Don Rickle's star with all of the flowers that was left in remembrance of him. I checked that out before heading over to La Brea Ave to pick up my race packet. This year they had race day packet pick-up. They originally announced that there wouldn't be a Friday race expo, however they eventually had their expo/packet pick-up over at A Runner's Circle on Los Feliz Blvd near Griffith Park on Friday. Since it wasn't convenient with public transportation, I opted for race day packet pick-up.

Don Rickle's star

After getting my race packet, I walked over to the Dolby Theatre where I bumped into a couple of familiar faces. While we were waiting there, I attached the timing chip to my shoe and the race bib to my belt. As it got closer to the designated time for the legacy group photo, we went to go use the portapotties. We then met up with a bunch of the other legacy runners in front of the Hollywood arch for the photo at about 5:30 am.

Legacy photo

Before jumping into the corral, my friend and I jogged all the way past the bib pick up location to use a cache of portapotties that had no lines. The corrals were in quite disarray this year. There were no volunteers or anybody there organizing the corrals. We made our way near the front as there were no corral assignments printed on our bibs. That could be why the corrals were a mess this year. We found there to be walkers up at the very front. Perhaps it was due to the announcement that the race director was trying to go for a record number of hugs. My friend wanted to get in on that, so we lined up near the side in preparation to go around the slower participants.

Once the race started at a little past 6 am, I skipped the hugging record gimmick and took a right turn for the first out-and-back out. It would be one out of a total of eleven out-and-backs. The first mile was pretty much my only good mile. I felt last night's late dinner fighting within my innards, so I slowed it down. After reaching mile 2, I took a quick walk break hoping that would allow everything to settle for a bit. It would be one of many walk breaks. I tried to sustain some good consecutive miles, but was only able to squeeze out two semi-decent miles after I let out a few small burps. At about 7.5 miles while jogging up Sunset Blvd, I bumped into two of my friends at about the same exact time. Since my race was going horribly, I was more than glad to stop for a couple of photos with them.

Dexter!

Phil!

Along with fighting with last night's dinner, I was starting to feel the legs cramp up. That only happens when I'm out of shape which made sense since I haven't been running consistently lately. I pulled over at the mile 10 marker to take a walk break and turned around to take a photo of my friend pacing the 1:50 group. I wish I could keep up with her, but the last 5k or so turned out to be a real grind. My left foot cramped up and the left ankle started to hurt as I approached the final turn. I tried my best to muster up a little jog to the finish line.

No red carpet at the finish this year

After crossing the finish line, I got my medal and headed through the finisher chute where I picked up a bunch of drinks and snacks. I then stopped by the tent to pick up my race shirt. I had trouble finding where to pick up my legacy gift. Eventually I bumped into a familiar face who directed me to the race timing company tent which was where they were distributing the legacy duffel bag. It had the smallest sign possible! Once they confirmed my identity, I got my nice bag. It was very useful as I used it to carry all of my drinks and snacks.

Since I didn't see anyone else that I knew, I walked back to my hotel room to get cleaned up. After that I packed up my bag and got ready to head out. It was a fairly smooth and uneventful trip back home. I was dozing off near the end of the trip. That's always bad since I could easily miss my stop.

This year was the 6th year of the race. I have been fortunate to be healthy each year and have successfully completed all of them. Unfortunately it was my slowest time. I should've eaten better. I could've stuck to my usual pre-race preparations. I probably would've been able to run at least 10 minutes faster. Should've. Could've. Would've. Hindsight is always 20/20. However I've run enough races to know that sometimes things will still go awry on race day regardless of executing the best laid out plans. I've certainly done much worse in the past.

After checking my results and grabbing some stats for all 6 years off of Athlinks, it doesn't bode well for there to be a race next year. Participation in the half marathon has declined throughout the years. With a significant drop this year, the numbers at its lowest, and having trouble with putting on an expo, I just don't see there being another race in 2018. I hope they prove me wrong!

Los Angeles Marathon 2017

I received in the mail during the week leading up to the race, a pair of orange shoelaces and a thank you postcard for raising enough money to bring clean water to 10 people. Asante sana (thank you) to my friends that joined me in trying to help those less fortunate! Now all I have to do is to go out and run a marathon through the streets of Los Angeles!

Asante sana!

3/18 Saturday
I woke up early to go to the race expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center via public transportation. I carried all of my stuff in one of the many run Disney plastic bags that I have since I was staying in a hotel in Little Tokyo. Good thing I always pack light! Once again I made my way over to the Pomona Transit Center and took the Silver Streak bus over to Union Station. It was pretty cool to see that they were having a 10 hour Bach marathon inside Union Station! We need some more culture in this world! From there I took the Metro rail into Downtown LA. I got off at Pico station and walked over to the convention center.

Wrong marathon! :)

The expo was located in the West Hall, the side next to Staples Center. Right before entering the expo, they had greeters handing out event guides. After going through the turnstiles, they had the wall of participants. I tried to locate my name, but it was not there. Apparently some of the names where obscured or covered up entirely by graphics! Unfortunately it looked as if charity runners were not officially registered until early March. I've spoken to a few of my friends that were also running for a charity group and their names were also missing. That's kind of lame.

After picking up my bib, I received a text from my friends. They were also at the expo. I texted back that I would meet up with them after I had finished picking up everything. I then picked up my race shirt and went inside to the vendor booths to find them over at the Fitbit booth. I skipped the official merchandise as I really didn't need any more running gear despite everything being marked 30% off. The only thing that I might have wanted to purchase were gloves and arm sleeves, two items that are rarely ever needed in Southern California. So needless to say, they didn't have any. I stopped by the Team World Vision booth to check in and pick up an orange bracelet for access to the team rally before the race at Dodger Stadium.

After we were done with the expo, we walked over to the nearby Yard House for lunch. We were a tad too early so we had to wait a few minutes for them to open up. Once we were seated, I ordered an Arnold Palmer to go with one of my favorite items, their Cobb salad with salmon.

Cobb salad with salmon

After lunch, we started heading back to the expo pretty much so that I could meet Kara Goucher, again. I've met her 3 times before, but she's my favorite elite runner. I wanted to see her again as she is nearing the end of her professional running career. As we exited the restaurant, I spotted Ryan Hall, a recent retiree, also there sitting at one of the tables outside. I didn't want to bother him and those with him, so it was just a quick head nod and "hey, it's Ryan Hall!"

It's Kara Goucher!

After I got an autograph and a photo with Kara, my friends and I went our separate ways. They were staying in Santa Monica while I was staying at the Miyako Hotel in Little Tokyo. I took the Metro rail from Pico over to Little Tokyo. I had to transfer to two different lines for that short trip. I checked into my room and it was nice to finally put down my bag. The weather got pretty warm and I was working up a sweat just from the walk from the Metro station. The room had a few amenities that I normally don't see in hotels. They had an emergency flashlight hanging by the door. They had a pair of slippers and the restroom had a fancy toilet with a built-in bidet. It must be because they cater mostly to Japanese clientele. Most importantly, the bed was clean and very comfortable!

Flashlight!

I went through my expo haul and laid out my running gear for tomorrow's race. Since I took public transportation, I decided to take a shower to feel a bit cleaner. Then I relaxed a bit while watching some of the NCAA March Madness games.

At almost 5:30 pm, I left my room and walked across the street to eat dinner at Suehiro Cafe. It was actually pretty packed inside. I was able to find a seat at the bar since I was dining alone. I ordered their shumai and sukiyakidon. It wasn't a whole lot of food or my usual meal from McDonald's, but it did hit the spot. After dinner, I went over to the nearby Nijiya Market to pick up a snack and a drink for the evening.

3/19 Sunday
I woke up at about 3 am to get ready and go catch the shuttle at Union Station. One advantage of staying close to Union Station was that I got to sleep a few extra hours! I gathered all of my stuff, headed downstairs, and checked out of my room. The walk over wasn't too bad. The police had already closed off certain streets in that area as the marathon course goes right past my hotel. The buses to Dodger Stadium were located at the Patsaouras Transit Center. They examined the contents of my gear bag and made sure that I had a race bib before I was allowed to board a rather nice luxury motorcoach. Coincidentally a friend of mine bumped into me on the bus. The last time we saw each other was when I gave her a ride after the LA Marathon several years ago. It's always nice to see a familiar face!

After we were dropped off, I made my way to the 3rd base side to join the Team World Vision rally. It was located at the loge level. We got there through the field level and taking the stairs up to loge. You had to have an orange bracelet to get up to loge. I was hoping we would get a suite, but I guess that costs quite a bit of money. It was still pretty spacious up there so the restrooms weren't too crowded. I actually left the rally before it started because I wanted to meet up with my other friends at the corral. Before leaving I looked for an old friend that was also running for Team World Vision, but I was unable to locate her.

I made my way to the UPS trucks to check my bag before heading over to corral E. I swung by the 1st base side field level entrance to see if I could spot any Marathon Maniacs for the pre-race photo, but I didn't see even one! Maybe they were running late.

Ready to roll!

This was a strange marathon for me. I started the race feeling pretty good, but I found myself feeling quite lethargic by mile 3. Usually I'm at about the halfway point when I start feeling that way. I had to throw every goal out of the window. I did feel a little better when I stuff myself with a banana. I eventually ended up "running" with a friend around mile 10 or so. We sure did a lot of walking! I don't believe in chance or coincidence. Everything happens for a reason. It was as if that was what I was supposed to do that day. She was having piriformi pain and I had no energy, so together we ran slow. She could've run faster, but she didn't want to hurt herself further right before the Boston Marathon. We shared a lot of stories about life and the crap we've endured throughout that 5 hr jog-a-thon. We probably would've made it in under 5 if I hadn't insist on stopping in at the McDonald's near mile 19 to buy a couple of hash browns. The volunteers at the aid station got a kick out of seeing me eating a hash brown. The first one was great, but the second one made me want to barf! Either way, I had to walk a lot mostly because of leg cramps.

After crossing the finish line, we got our hard earned medals. I liked it. It was very similar to the one that we got last year. It was a simple, clean, and a two sided design. It was also in my favorite color, blue!

We got some bananas, a water bottle, and some bags of snacks as we made our way through the finisher chute. We also grabbed a mylar blanket before heading over to the UPS truck so that I could pick up my gear bag. The awesome volunteers had my bag ready as I walked up to the table! It took me a while to rearrange the contents of my bag since I had so much stuff in it. As we were about to head out, it was pretty cool that I got to see one of my friends from Team RWB!

Team RWB!

Afterwards, we started walking around trying to find the Ragnar booth for my friend to pick up her bonus medal. None of the signs said where it was, but we asked around and was told that it was at the beer garden. We had walked a ways down Ocean Blvd before turning around and started heading over to the beer garden. Just like last year, getting to the beer garden was a pain in the ass! Friends and families of runners were clogging the entrance/exit point of the finish festival. They seriously need to find a bigger venue to accommodate the number of people or better direct the spectators to give the finishers room to exit the chute!

After getting her Ragnar medal, we headed over to the beer garden. My friend had a beer garden bracelet, so she was able to go inside without waiting in line for ID check. After getting my ID checked, I went inside and said hi to a few friends. Since I don't drink alcohol anymore, after a short while, I said my goodbyes and started heading over to the Santa Monica Metro station over on 4th St and Colorado Ave. There was no line for the Metro rail unless you needed to purchase your fare. Getting out of Santa Monica was headache-free for me this year and it only cost me $1.75! I took the Metro rail over to Union Station where I caught the Silver Streak bus and headed home.

Metro Santa Monica to Union Station:$1.75
Silver Streak:$2.45
Transfer:$0.50
Foothill Transit 286:$1.25
Total for Sunday:$5.95
Total transportation cost for the weekend:$12.40

It would've been a tad cheaper, but I screwed up with the last transfer purchase since it was only good for 2 hrs. The Silver Streak bus that I was on was a bit late getting into the Pomona Transit Center, so I had to wait for the next 286 bus. Public transportation is doable and cheaper than driving in Los Angeles, but it sure takes a lot of time!
